What is Karmafan?

Karmafan is a way for fans to directly support their favorite artists.

Support?

Karmafan is based on the idea that artists can get real monetary support from people who enjoy their work. It's a new form of patronage.

How does it work?

Fans install the Karmafan application and top up their Karmafan accounts. They can then give as much or as little as they like to an artist with the Karmafan app installed - even 1 cent. Fans can give a little something whenever they're on a MySpace page and they see the Karmafan profile box.

What does it cost?

Karmafan is FREE.

What does Karmafan get out of this?

Artists can voluntarily support Karmafan just as their fans have supported them. Since we launched in September 2007, we've been true to our claim that we would try to exist in the same way that we believe is possible for artists - through direct patronage.

No fees?

The only fees are the ones charged by PayPal or by mobile phone operators for the top-up. This means that when you top up your account by $10, they might take 50 cents. But you'll see the full $10 in your account. The fee charged by the payment gateway is deducted from the artists when we send them the support they've collected from lots of fans. So if a fan supports five artists with $2 each, then each of those artists will receive $1.90 ($10 minus 50 cents equals $9.50 divided by 5 artists equals $1.90 each).

Why not just send the money straight to the artist?

This way you can give smaller amounts more often. So if you find you're really enjoying a song or a blog post you can send 10 cents quickly and easily from the Karmafan box on the artist's MySpace page with no need to go to another site or log into PayPal.

What happens to the money in my Karmafan account when I top up?

Once you top up your Karmafan account the money will remain in your Karmafan account until you use it to support an artist. Once you support an artist the money will be transfered from your Karmafan account to the artist's Karmafan account. Artists can withdraw money from their Karmafan account once they have received $25 or more. Karmafan doesn't use the money in your Karmafan account for any purpose other than to allow you to support artists.

What do fans get out of it?

Good Karma. They also show their appreciation and support the future work of artists they like.

Is that all fans get out of it?

Is that all fans get out of it?

  • Your Karmafan profile box shows the artists you have supported. This updates as you support so it reflects the artists you like in real-time
  • When you support an artist your name appears immediately on the list of fans on the artist's MySpace page
  • You can send a short message with your support, which the artist will see when they check their account
